Don Li-Leger

Don Li-Leger studied art and natural science in the 1970s and throughout that decade also traveled to Asia and India, drawn by the art, gardens and philosophical traditions.

Don’s career as a visual artist spans five decades, the first two of which he spent building a reputation as a realist (nature) artist and print maker. In 1999 he began a series of works that combined abstract elements with geometry, botany, calligraphy and collage which referenced Eastern philosophy and nature.   While this departure came as a surprise to some, it represented no loss of momentum for his success in the art world.  His paintings have been exhibited throughout North America; and etchings, monoprints, and reproductions of his art are widely available throughout the world as fine-art prints and posters.

Most recently, Don’s interest turned to videography and film making.  In support of and collaboration with his close friend Zheng Shengtian (founding board member of Centre A and managing editor of Yishu journal), Don helped to collect and archive material documenting the most well-known contemporary artists of China, as well as contributing to projects in Beijing and New York.

Don’s interest and enthusiasm for the emergence of Asia on the world stage, and the resulting influences in our local society, provided a strong personal motivation to foster cultural bridges which enrich and deepen these global connections.

Sadly Don passed away in April 2019, after a brief but intense struggle with glioblastoma.  He is profoundly missed by his family and many friends.

Li Lin

Li Lin is the founder and creative director for the clothing brand JNBY. She is not only the principal sponsor of “Heart to Heart: An Interview Project with Chinese Artists,” but was also intimately involved in the project, assisting in with the interview recording process.

JNBY strives to encourage innovation and Li Lin feels that she has personally benefitted greatly from the arts, using art to enrich her own life and the lives of those around her.

Li Lin loves to take in exhibitions and undertake research on art and artists to inform her collecting and though she is a veteran collector, Li nonetheless keeps a low profile in the Chinese art circle. However, those closest to her understand that she is not only an important collector but also an energetic supporter of numerous Chinese contemporary art projects, such as the “Yishu Prize in Chinese Contemporary Art Criticism.”

Li Lin believes that: “Art is more about asking questions, while design is more focused on solving problems. The products which emerge from design must have a specific function; whereas art prefers to casually toss questions out to the viewer. These questions have the possibility of provoking the viewer to re-think a lot of issues, to change their way of thinking, and this, I think, is the really great thing about art.”
